Shape, not depth. This traces the tide’s rise and fall — not a ruler on the water. Heights are the size of the tide, not the depth of the water here: metres above chart datum at our Immingham reference, carried to this port by a time offset with no height ratio. The shaded band around each high water is the published ±40-minute accuracy window, not a claimed minute.

Two high waters most days, roughly twelve hours apart. Each high water is accurate to ±40 min. Low water is worked out from the high waters either side of it, so it is a wider estimate — ±70 min — and is shown smaller for that reason. “Spring” tides run higher and faster than “neap”.

Heights are the size of the tide, not the depth of the water here. They are metres above chart datum at Immingham, our reference port — we carry a timing offset to Holkham Beach but no height ratio, so a big number does not mean a deep creek.

What the tide controls here

At Holkham, the tide controls how far out the sands go, how long the walk to the water is, and when the channels behind the beach start to fill.

Horse riding
Riding is below the high tide mark, and the Estate ask you to check tide times, avoid the beach at high tide, and be aware of areas that may be cut off. Holkham Estate →

15% of people in the UK and Ireland have been cut off — or nearly cut off — by the tide in their lifetime (RNLI/Bangor University, April 2025). A calendar you don’t have to remember to check is one less thing to get wrong.

Dangers here

Specific to this location. The sea is dangerous everywhere on this coast — this is what the tide does here.

Holkham sands: read this before you walk out

People get cut off here. The sands are flat and vast, the flood tide moves faster than it looks, and the channels behind you fill before the beach does — so the water can be between you and the shore while you are still standing on dry sand.

Holkham Estate advise being off any sandbank four hours before high tide. Follow their advice, not the bare number in this table.

Our timing for this beach is inferred, not measured. There is no official tidal station at Holkham, so these times are derived from the nearest open-coast reference and carry a wider window than our other locations. Treat them as a rough guide only.

These are predictions, never observations. Wind, surge and pressure move real tides. Do not use this page for navigation or any decision where being wrong could put someone in danger.

How this time is worked out

Every time on this page is high water at Immingham, shifted by 20 minutes for Holkham Beach, and published as a ±40 minute window.

Worked out from nearby coast. There is no tidal station at Holkham. This offset is reasoned from the open coast either side, which is why the window here is wider.

How we work out every time on this site

This is a prediction of the astronomical tide. It cannot know what the weather is doing, and wind, pressure and surge all move real water. It is one input to a decision you make — never the decision itself.
